Empire: Chasing Shadows (reissue)

Anglo-German melodic metallers Empire have recently seen their four albums reissued through Pride and Joy. Chasing Shadows, originally released back in 2007, was their final album to date and also proved to be their most commercially successful, no doubt in part due to the addition of former Rainbow vocalist Doogie White who had replaced Tony Martin. The brainchild of German guitarist Rolf Munkes, Empire featured various notable musicians along the way and on Chasing Shadows the rhythm section consisted of another stalwart in Neil Murray on bass together with drummer Mike Terrana (Rage, Axel Rudi Pell).

Taking his lead from the classic eras of Dio, Whitesnake and Rainbow, Munkes once again delivered up some tasty riffs across this album with the pounding title track kicking in and immediately setting the bar for the rest to follow. White is pretty impressive throughout and even though live he can be patchy at times his studio track record speaks for itself. Slower moments 'Sail Away' and 'Child of the Light' sound pretty much as you might expect given the titles and the epic storytelling narratives of 'Angel and the Gambler' and 'The Rulers of the World' add some real depth to the band's overall sound with Murray and Terrana proving to be a top-notch combination. These studio based projects can be hit and miss but Empire certainly managed to avoid the obvious pitfalls and clearly gelled as a solid hard rock band.
