Sonorous AEon is the debut album from Norwegian melancholy post rock/doom act AEsthetica, a collection of six tracks steeped in a lot of fuzz and bleak musical passages. Citing influences as Black Sabbath, Swans, and Godspeed! You Black Emperor, the band certainly are adept at creating some potent & chilling musical soundscapes. "Haze" lumbers along with plenty of ferocious doom riffing and haunting vocals (reminding of mid '80s Celtic Frost a bit), while the more meditative, post rock side of the band can be heard on the slow burner "Todesfuge" and the epic, atmospheric "La Paz", the albums longest cut at just under 11-minutes. "Gates" offers more minimalist arrangements, and the lengthy "Ekstasis" shows a more accessible, textured side of the band with different guitar flavors, but it's the upbeat & raucous "Worshipper" that provides the most dramatic and frantic moments, complete with fat guitar & bass riffs, pounding drums, and pleading vocals.
Lots of different shades and textures to be found on Sonorous AEon, signaling the arrival of a band that appears to have a bright future ahead of them. Doom & post rock fans should certainly check this one out.
