Casket Robbery: The Ascension (single)

A quick three track blast announces an almost entirely new line-up for Wisconsin's Casket Robbery, only guitarist Cory Scheider – who is now flanked by Troy Powell also on guitar and bassist Derek Silloway – surviving from last year's Evolution Of Evil full length debut. Although with the completely convincing Megan Orvold now behind the mic, the band's brutal death imprint remains firmly and confidently in place. The previous touching points of Devildriver and Cannibal Corpse are still in evidence, but with Orvold providing a blood curdling growl that rasps and roars, the focus is altered into a more pointed, if no less brutish attack.

Of the three tracks it's the technically impressive "Lilith" that really lives long in the memory through a discordant guitar solo and thoroughly believable bass assault, but the slower grind of "The Ascension", which adds a more refined edge of early Sepultura, isn't far behind. Whereas opening cut "Pockets Lined With Flowers" brings an interesting theatric side that you might not have expected.

Putting things in perspective, this single is only three tracks and just over ten minutes long. Make no bones about though, as a taster of things to come not only is The Ascension an impressive morsel, it's also quite a step up from where Casket Robbery were before.
