"Gulp..."
That was my first reaction after hearing the latest from Poland's death metal merchants Behemoth. Demigod is as brutal as you can get folks, plain and simple. With huge, crushing guitar riffs that are fast, furious, heavy, and technical, as well as blood curdling vocals, this is not music to be taken lightly, nor is it for the faint of heart.
If the guitar riffs to the brutal title track aren't enough to sell you , then I don't know what else is. This band goes for your jugular, and has every intention of ripping your neck to pieces and feasting on your vital remains. There's no doubting the musical capabilities of drummer Inferno, guitarist/vocalist Nergal, guitarist Seth, and bassist Orion. Listen to the complex riffery of "Conquer All", the doomy death-metal stomp of "The Nephilim Rising" or the epic sounds of "The Reign ov Shemsu-Hor" (a symphonic yet doomy slice of masterful progressive death metal) for perfect examples of what this extreme outfit are capable of. Vocally, depending on your preference, there's lots of grunts and growls, which perfectly suit the music, although for some that might get tiresome after a while. There's some neat male choir harmonies on the brutal "Sculpting The Throne ov Seth " which help add a little variety, but overall as long as you don't mind the scary growls there's plenty of meaty riffs and some tasty lead work all over this CD.
This is massive stuff here (get it...Behemoth, massive...whatever), and Demigod is certain to be an extreme metal album that will be hard to top in 2005. File under menacing and brutal with lots of potential.
