Transylvania Stud are a desert rock/stoner/doom act that actually don't hail from Transylvania at all, but Virginia here in the USA, and the truth of the matter is that they are not even an actual band, but a one-man project of Andrew Godfrey, who handles all the vocals, guitars, bass, and drums on the EP The Red Queen. At just under 25-minutes, The Red Queen contains some pretty catchy, groovy, and yes, heavy material. The riffs are thick on the title cut and the chorus has some serious hooks, while "Of Suffering" also lumbers and sways along enough to get your toes tapping and the air guitar prompted to make an appearance. "Comsummate" even has some intriguing psych elements going on, Godfrey's effects laden guitar work screaming the late '60s San Francisco scene, the vocals catchy, and the bass booming. As a bonus, the EP contains an alternate version of the title track, and an upbeat, near punk rock tune "Burn".
After you get through the three songs and the bonus tracks, you'll be wanting more, so hopefully Godfrey puts his talents right back to work, and either delivers another platter of this DIY stuff or puts together a fully fleshed out band to take his vision to the next level. He definitely can write a catchy, heavy tune, he's got the vocal & instrumental chops to back it all up, so I'm sure we can expect some big things from him in the not so distant future.
