Telescope Road: Telescope Road
Telescope Road is an international project consisting of three musicians; American fretless bassist William Kopecky (Kopecky, Pär Lindh Project, Far Corner), Finnish drummer David Lillkvist (Gjallarhorn, Pär Lindh Project) and French guitarist Alain Chiarazzo (Eclat).
This is an interesting release mostly due to the expressive and unique bass tones from Kopecky. His bass is all over the album and forms the root of these six tracks. The other two musicians are fine in their own right so you can be rest assured the playing is very good. Although this music lies in the progressive rock genre the band have quite a unique sound adding jazz and metal touches here and there and a whole lot of fusion.
There are a total of six tracks, three instrumentals and three with vocals beginning with the funky grooves of "Crystal Revenge". Kopecky offers some cool bending and sustain while the guitarist lays down slightly discordant guitar structures at times venturing into Eastern tones. As the song progresses the riffs get more distorted before clean guitar is expressed once again. Nice dynamics in this one and very progressive as well. "Serpent" is a more unsettling affair with sinister-like whispered vocals and wonderful acoustic guitar. Again the song traverses through many twists and turns ensuring boredom never sets in. The instrumental "Gut Metal" offers more interesting changes including some wonderful flamenco acoustic guitar. Perhaps the prettiest tune is the mellower "Fireworks And January Skies" featuring the wonderful lead and backing vocals of Sibongile Mbambo.
Telescope Road have made a fine debut album of progressive fusion that many fans of progressive rock should enjoy. Job well done.
