For all those who deemed it impossible for a metal band to spend their entire career writing songs and singing about beer drinking, German thrash act Tankard have been defying those odds since the early '80s, and show no signs of letting up on their love of the magical hops laden brew. AFM Records is celebrating the long stretch that the band resided on their roster, as Hymns For the Drunk looks back at the years 2002-2010, and features the line up of Andreas Geremia (vocals), Andreas Gutjahr (guitar), Frank Thorwarth (Bass), and Olaf Zissel (drums). Now, if you've never experienced the music of Tankard before, just check your brain at the door and be prepared to have a lunkheaded, thrashy, and boozy good time. The song titles & lyrics are laughable, and the music is a relentless assault of crunchy riffing and double bass drumming. Geremia spews out the bands love of beer on fun tunes like "New Live Please!", "Need Money for Beer", "Die With a Beer in Your Hand", "The Morning After", and "Stay Thirsty", and though they deviate occasionally with stuff like "Zombie Attack", "Time Warp", and "Slipping From Reality", for the most part this is just four guys who would like their fans to have as much fun with their brand of brainless beer soaked metal as they are.
Honestly, if you don't feel compelled to get out into the mosh pit while listening to "Medley (Alcohol, Puke, Mon Cheri, Wonderful Life)", your metal credentials need to seriously get checked at the door. Long live Tankard...it's time for a beer!
