Potin, Yves: Forest Stairways

Yves Potin is another new artist to my ears. The French musician/composer has previously gone by the moniker Jazzcomputer.org but on his new release Forest Stairways he uses his real name. The music is billed as electronic/prog/jazz which is pretty much what you get with this release.

The first track "Flying Owl" is a fine slice of proggy ambience beginning with strange percussive sounds and dreamy instrumentation, most notably electrified koto (a Japanese stringed instrument). There is definitely an oriental feel before the music shifts via pulsating electronics and shimmering keyboards passing in and out of the soundscape in waves. Now the sound is very spacey with perhaps a touch of Tangerine Dream and softer Pink Floyd with some of the lead guitar lines. With "Forest Chimes" the beginning is very dreamy and mellow with faint chimes and a soft ambient texture. The keyboards and electronics drift across the soundscape creating a spacier mood. The use of percussion and electronics builds into a softer bit of chaos before the dreamlike soundscape returns once again. Potin's smart use of electronics and synthesizers should not go unnoticed. A slightly darker mood is set in the mysterious sounding "Forest Mist", another fine slice of moody ambient trippiness. The disc ends with "Future Tribes" beginning with a heavier wash of synth textures unfolding like an opaque shroud of darkness. The synths and electronics are thoughtfully used as is some nice electric guitar soloing. It is these contrast in moods that keeps the music interesting.

Forest Stairways is a very well executed self-release and is certainly worth a listen for ambient and electronic music fans as well as those who enjoy the mellower side of progressive and jazz. Recommended.
