Contra la indecisión is the first new release in six years from the Bobo Stenson Trio, which features Stenson on piano, Anders Jormin on double bass, and Jon Fält on drums. Containing eleven tracks filled with original compositions, some covers, and some improvisation, Contra la indecisión is a magical set that will thrill jazz lovers of all ages. A song like the opening "Canción Contra La Indecisión" is lush with alluring melodies and great ensemble playing, but the trio go for a more laid back tone on the atmospheric "Doubt Thou the Stars, Jormin's leathery lead bass taking a much more up front approach and the leader laying down some gentle strains on the piano. "Wedding Song From Poniky" is just gorgeous, and another great display of the mastery of Stenson on his instrument, which leads in to the more upbeat "Three Shades of a House", a piece with not only an engaging melody line but also tremendous groove, Fält working overtime alongside Jormin's acrobatic lass lines. Jormin also pulls out his bow for a dreamy "Alice", and digs deep with plenty of bottom end on the quirky, highly enjoyable romp "Oktoberhavet", a tune also highlighted by Stenson's majestic flights. Another standout is the classy closer "Hemingway Intonations", the melodies spot on and all three musicians locked in for a tight journey of spectacular jazz arrangements.
That last statement basically sums up all of Contra la indecisión, a really wonderful album from a jazz trio that are just firing on all cylinders. Once again, another winner from ECM Records, the home of some of the best jazz on the planet.
