Anand Mahangoe is a Dutch guitarist in the school of Steve Vai. His debut album, A Man's Mind, has been re-released by Lion Music. This all instrumental CD is exactly what you would expect from a guitar ace. It is long on soloing and short on melody. This is more a showcase for guitar playing than songwriting.
If you enjoy fast, intricate, licks, this CD will not disappoint. It is not of the quality of some of Satriani's output, but it comes close. During a few key moments, Anand has a serious mid-70s Santana sound coming out of his guitar that makes me wonder what he would sound like with a latin-rhythm section instead of the hard rocking backup band he has.
And that really is where my feelings lie in regards to A Man's Mind. This is entertaining playing and musicianship, but nothing that is unique or new to the genre. If you love guitar wizardry, I recommend you buy this CD. For me, I kept wondering what would happen if he was playing over Greg Rolle's keyboards and Steve Smith's drum kit.
