Corciolli: Ilusia
Here is another nice surprise that came out in 2017. The Brazilian composer, keyboardist, producer Corciolli and his album titled Ilusia. According to the press release Corciolli has sold about two million albums. Who knew? I previously reviewed his album Lightwalk which is much less progressive than Ilusia.
There are eight instrumental tracks all composed, produced and performed by Corciolli. He also enlisted the help of Ramon Montagner (drums) and Mauricio Oliveira (bass) (tracks 1, 3 and 4).
The music is quite laid back and easy flowing with a very relaxed feel. There is the occasional moment of tension without disturbing the flow of each song. If you want discord and disharmony this is not the album for you. That is not to say this music invokes feelings of happiness as it has a depth of feel that is not easily ignored. The more I listened the more I really came to dig this album. Corciolli does a tremendous job of layering sounds and his keyboard choices are outstanding influenced by Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and Alan Parsons among others. He also uses guitar samples to great effect and demonstrates his composing and arranging chops throughout the album. Ambient, progressive rock and space rock are touched upon all with a veil of moodiness and atmosphere. I like all the tracks but a couple of highlights include the atmospheric and proggy "Secrets of the Invisible" and the moody and spacey "The Misery of Fear and the Battle Against the Immortal Dream" featuring floating keyboards and outstanding lead guitar.
If you are in the mood for a mellower ambient-like listen while still getting that progginess you covet, Ilusia is an album I can whole heartedly recommend. An excellent late night listen.
