Sinistro: Sangue Cassia
Despite this band's collective musical talents, the biggest draw is certainly Patricia Andrade. Her vocals are so gorgeous and so strong that it's hard not to listen, if only for a few moments. If you've never heard her sing, it's hard to capture the sound of her voice quickly. As I listened, I immediately thought of another Portuguese singer, Carmen Simões, but the comparison isn't quite right. Others have compared her to Siouxsie Sioux in that she's larger than life, dramatic, and bold, but that isn't right either. I suggest just listening to Andrade sing for a while to see what you think. She definitely stands out from the crowd.
This album, the band's third full-length, is moody, heavy, and beautiful. The music blends ambient and doom elements in ways that showcase Andrade's voice without sounding like mere filler. This album is certainly a step forward for the band in that the music is heavier and the band is more interested in creating a solid and rich atmosphere. This is the kind of music you could have on while doing other things, but I definitely suggest paying attention to this one. The music is heavy but combines that heaviness with a style that is sensual and moving.
I know that some listeners will be disappointed that the band isn't as heavy as it should have been especially since there are obvious doom elements here. It's important to remember that Sinistro is exploring musical possibilities outside of conventional doom metal. The music here is closer to a doom-inspired atmosphere, one that wants to evoke feeling rather than simply crushing things. It certainly isn't traditional doom metal by any means, but it is bleak enough to suit my tastes. Check out "Abismo" for the best example of how Sinistro handles doom elements. Sure, there are lighter moments but the band is definitely taking a major step forward here. This is worth checking out for sure. I recommend "Abismo" for sure, but give "Cosmos Controle" a listen, too.
