Irdorath: Denial of Creation
Even if you're not interested in this album, I highly recommend looking at the cover art. It's one of those pictures that takes up the front and back of a CD case (or record cover). You'll definitely want to unfold the booklet to see the whole thing because it's pretty striking. As you'll quickly notice, the art blends images from the modern world (skyscrapers, missiles, a nuclear facility) with figures that seem to be taken from either the Bible or from Christian history. But that's deceptive. The main figure, the one that looks like an ancient priest, is striding along too confidently and the look on his face is just too menacing. Either he caused the destruction or he's happy about it. I mean, the world is clearly bursting into flames and he seems happy about it. It reminds me a little of that poem by Yeats called "The Second Coming" in which we learn that the end of the world is about the arrival of a "rough beast" rather than of a savior. Since this album is called Denial of Creation, I'll bet that menacing figure is more like that beast.
Even if the album art is interesting, is the album worth a listen? Yes-especially if you like powerful and heavy music that crosses elements of thrash with the attitude and mood of black metal. The lyrics are frequently dark and despairing, typically drawing on demonic imagery. It reminded me of the kinds of things Ghost does, even if the musical delivery is a far cry from what those guys are doing. Irdorath is all about the frontal assault and they have the chops to pull one off effectively. This band thrashes with the best of them but they also add components of black metal-including the blast beats and tremolo picking-that mix things up in interesting ways. The band isn't exactly breaking new ground, but they cover what ground they take with skill and speed. I'd say it's worth a listen. Check out "Devoured by Greed" and "The Curse that Haunts the Earth."
