Demonomancy: Poisoned Atonement

For me, this album has two highlights. The first is the opening track, "Intro-Revelation 21.8," mostly because the Biblical text brings to mind Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast." But this isn't read by a dignified British actor with a killer voice. Instead, this Biblical passage about the "second death" is read with rasps and hisses-and to good effect. As introductions go, this one is pretty good even though nothing will ever be as good as "Number of the Beast."

The second highlight is "The Last Hymn to Eschaton," a fine song with a killer bass opening. For me, that track captures Demonomancy's "bestial metal" better than any other. I know that some listeners thing Demonomancy borrows too much from Blasphemy, Profanatica, and VON. To be fair, that's exactly what they are doing, but I can't fault them for building on giants within the subgenre. This album, the band's second, is just the right time to blend those influences with a little extra creative energy. For me, this track captures that energy the most. It's a good song and I recommend checking it out for sure. I also thought "The Day of the Lord" was pretty good.

My main complaint about this album is that its strengths are sometimes distracting. Like other black metal fans, I like it when things are raw, primitive, and daring. And yet, those very strengths begin to wear thin without enough variety. Some fans will love the relentless pummeling and pounding this album offers. Others may find it tedious.
