Boundless is the sixth album from German instrumental prog-rock act Long Distance Calling, and continues their close knit relationship with powerhouse genre label InsideOut Music. Here, the band have chosen to drift away from including guest musicians & vocalists and get back to a purely instrumental sound featuring just themselves, the current line-up of Dave (guitar), Flo (guitar), Janosch (drums), and Jan (bass). The results are a diverse collection of compositions that offer plenty of varying tones, textures, colors, and moods, from the lengthy hard-hitting guitar & rhythmic juggernaut that is the album opener "Out There", the complex progressive metal riffery of "Ascending", the atmospheric space-rock of "In the Clouds", the ambient & desert tones of "Like a River", to the lush prog, new wave, and metal on the exciting "On the Verge". Dave & Flo's guitar tones throughout the album take on many forms, and these guys can fire off a crunchy riff just as well as they can settle into some dreamy soundscapes, evident on the final two scorchers here "Weightless" and the potent "Skydivers".
If you love instrumental progressive rock/metal, it doesn't get much better than Boundless, another fine collection of musical extravagance from a band that still has plenty of tricks up their sleeve.
