Mirrors Of Obsidian: From One Form

Irish extreme metal brothers Ciaran and Eoin Ennis are Mirrors From Obsidian, Ciaran the growling vocal powerhouse of the outfit, his brother handling 'instruments'. From One Form is the pair's second album, the excellently monikered Imminent Chaos Complete a bandcamp debut that landed some eight years ago. Arriving in 2017, album number two may have taken some time to appear but these lads have not been wasting their time. Introducing stoner groove elements into what is a keen progressively inclined slab of death, "Neutral Disease" and "Close To Interception" leave little doubt how lethally accurate the grinding howls of guitars from Eoin are. Ciaran pours his heart into surprisingly (and welcome) clear extreme vocals, every bark given a real force, without ever tumbling into rage over precision. Not that he leaves you anything other then floored by the power surge of ferocity that he's capable of throwing out at will. This singer's thoroughly convincing machinations a real, lasting head turner.

In truth there's a worry that the brothers might just have peaked too early, but even taking into account that "Close..." remains the best thing on show, the rest of From One Form could easily impress without it. Precision percussive fury standing tall during "Eternity Gone", the roaming tom work aligned to numerous alterations of tempo to grab you by the throat. And things don't slide from there, "Blood And Chrome", "Violent Reprisal" and "Lightwaves" creating an ever evolving landscape that proves alluring. With occasionally restrained sections offering clever respite from the assault and Ciaran the opportunity to reveal impressive clean vocals, the interest levels are never allowed to drop. However it's the nine minutes of the title track that truly allows Mirrors Of Obsidian to really stretch out and cavort in their deathly progressive playground. It's an opportunity they do not waste, the journey through mood and style on this track majestic indeed.

There are a lot of extreme metal acts out there and a lot operating in the arena Mirrors Of Obsidian have chosen to enter. However not many are revealing such exciting, engaging and long lasting results. From One Form demands your attention and that's exactly what you should give it.
