Saraga, Jonathan: Journey To A New World
Jonathan Saraga is a very talented trumpeter who released his debut album a few years ago titled First Vision. He is back with a new band and new album titled Journey To A New World and what a great journey it is. Besides Saraga we have:
Remy Le Boeuf (alto sax)
Aki Ishiguro (guitar)
Chris Pattishall (piano, Fender Rhodes)
Rick Rosato (bass)
Kenneth Salters (drums)
The disc comprises of three covers and four originals beginning with "Uprising", a real stunner. The repeating bass line, imaginative trumpet and sax interplay and the clarity of the instruments is truly exceptional. Nearing the end of the song Salters' drum work is inspiring to the say the least. The composition flows beautifully yet exhibits a twisting nature, running the gauntlet between nuance and scintillating sax and trumpet solos.
With "The Great Journey" the band takes multiple pathways between slowly evolving calmness and more intense moments as all the band members demonstrate their considerable skill. The complexity is readily apparent yet Saraga has an ear for melody, never losing himself within the arrangement. There are no weak links in this band with each musician contributing to the whole of the piece.
Another intriguing cut is a reimagining of The Beatles' classic "The Fool On The Hill". While the original melody is confirmed, the trumpet, guitar and drum work is especially brilliant. The song moves fluidly through softer moments to more intense instrumental workouts.
Journey To A New World is a wonderful album of modern jazz with confident musicianship, imaginative arrangements and outstanding melodies.
A Fresh Sound Records release.
