Windhand and Satan's Satyrs: Split
Ever since Soma, I've been hooked on Windhand's fuzz-soaked power. Every new song gets my attention and makes me a believer all over again. On this split, the band gives us two new songs, "Old Evil" and "Three Sisters." Both are fantastic, but if you only have time for one give "Three Sisters" a listen. That song has Windhand's signature fuzz and Dorthia Cottrell's voice is soaring, haunting, and strong. If you've never listened to Windhand before, now's your chance to discover this great band.
The other half of this split features Satan's Satyrs, another Virginia-based powerhouse. I've never heard of them until now, but they certainly have my attention. If you already like Windhand, don't come to Satan's Satyrs expecting something similar. Satan's Satyrs are more like a punk / metal band playing in the tradition of The Helicopters or Blue Cheer. Of their three tracks, I liked "Succubus" best, but there's simply no reason to overlook the others.
This is a satisfying release from two solid bands. I look forward to hearing more from both of them.
