Swedish doom merchants Burning Saviours have gotten even more melancholy & dark on their latest release for Transubstans Records, titled, appropriately, Death. Now 15 years into their career, the band have taken their obvious influences of Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Candlemass, and Cathedral, fine tuned their approach, and delivered a very strong album chock full of slow, ponderous funeral dirges, galloping doom anthems, and lengthy, menacing, atmospheric passages. Just listen to those crushing riffs paired up against some creepy organ on the ominous "Nothing After", as well as the funeral death march that is the potent opener "Draug" for great examples of the power this band brings. If you like slightly more uptempo, headbanging doom material, look no further than "Crusade of Evil" and "Lamentations", each one complete with pounding drums , chugging riffs, and effective mid-range vocal snarls. The title tracks also goes for the jugular with some mighty effective riffing, while the somewhat bluesy stoner metal "Haxnatten" tosses in some sizzling lead guitar and can't miss grooves. The band even toss in some spooky prog on the lengthy "Silence", an epic sounding, atmospheric doom laden piece with some chilling, early Ozzy styled vocals from singer Mikael Monks.
Once again, here we have some more quality new music from Sweden, a country that seems to have dibs on the glorious sounds of the '70s and '80s these days. Burning Saviours have been on quite a roll the last few years, and that roll continues here with Death. Doom fans, dig in deep.
