Vocalist Mats Levén has certainly kept up a busy career over the last twenty years. Juggling Yngwie Malmsteen, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Candlemass, Krux, Therion, Gus G, and At Vance, among many others, has helped him build an impressive resume and made him one of the most in-demand singers on the hard rock & metal scene. With his new project Revertigo, he's teamed up with longtime friend & multi-instrumentalist Anders Wikström, along with drummer Thomas Broman, and their self-titled debut will be released on Frontiers Records.
Revertigo is somewhat of a departure from what we've heard from Levén, as here he and Wikström dive headfirst into catchy melodic rock not far removed from label mates Pretty Maids, Eclipse, and Revolution Saints. Memorable hooks and crisp guitar riffs are the name of the game across tunes such as "Symphony of Fallen Angels", "Sailing Stones", the hard rocking "False Flag", and the ridiculous yet ultra addicting "Hoodwinked". The bluesy stomp of "Luciferian Break Up" is a lot of fun, littered with some meaty guitar licks, and there are even a few mellower & more atmospheric numbers thrown in to add some variety to the album. Through it all, Levén sounds great as always, and the instrumentation is rock solid from the trio, making for an enjoyable, if not overly earth shattering debut from this promising act.
