Dolcetti: Arriver

I haven't heard many albums quite like Arriver, the latest from Dolcetti (released in 2016), the Italian duo of Gianni Rojatti (guitars and everything else) and Erik Tulissio (acoustic and electronic drums). This instrumental effort is both rhythmically challenging and incredibly uplifting which sits alongside bands like Animals As Leaders, Steve Vai and occasionally Frank Zappa, especially when venturing into more quirky realms. These musicians have the chops to play amongst the very best and while the music might be indulgent it never feels like that is the case, likely due to the overall joyous vibe emanating from these quite delicious grooves.

Wicked guitar solos amidst solid riffs with light and heavy shades highlight the catchy "Cellulare in bagno", a fine opening number. On the synth/guitar heavy "Un dito due estati" the music is almost pop-like and very upbeat but the soloing is still exceptional. More excellent guitar and synth interaction with a lush keyboard background can be heard in "Idea effe". The quirky guitar acrobatics are totally refreshing with an addictive repeating motif that is as catchy as glue.

If there was any doubt whether Rojatti is an exceptional guitarist have a listen to "Lingua verde di Prosecco". His freakishly fast runs and off the wall soloing will have many a prog fan shaking their heads in disbelief.

The disc ends with the part bluesy, part jazzy "Corri, corri bambina" featuring another catchy melody and excellent soloing.

To further add to the album's charms you might have noticed seven of eight tracks are the same length. I'm not sure the significance of this but it's kind of cool nonetheless.

Instrumental progressive rock fans with a penchant for ultra-fast soloing will want to give this a listen. If that doesn't apply to you I still recommend you check Arriver out. You just might be pleasantly surprised.
