Given that I gave 2012's Legacy of Life a mostly positive review while SoT quite enjoyed Pieces of Eden (2013) I was intrigued to check out Age of Discovery.
I have to say that Age of Discovery is somewhat of an improvement on the previous efforts from the band (even though I'm giving it the same rating) especially in the middle of the album where they hit a melodic metal seam of quality. "Just A Conversation" with its Simple Minds-type opening is the best song on the album by some distance, it is a succinct, pithy tune which is memorable for days afterwards whilst "The Right Stuff" is definitely made of the right…you fill in the blanks. Nils Patrik Johansson brings real authority to the real opening song "That's The Way That Life Goes" and overall the album has more hooks than JM Barrie's imagination.
