Centuries: The Lights of this Earth are Blinding
It's been a few years since Centuries released their impressive debut, Taedium Vitae. Since then, the band has experienced a handful of changes, including a shifting lineup and a move from a common hub in South Florida to a long-distance relationship split between the US and the UK. I don't think Centuries will suffer too much because of these changes. If anything, they sound better than before.
The band's current lineup includes Eric Verporter (guitar / vocals), Phil Trona (guitar), Dionisio Rodriguez (bass), and Derrick Flanagin (drums). Together, the band sounds a little more mature, both in songwriting and performance. For fans of the first album, don't worry. The music is pretty consistent with the band's earlier hardcore style, but there is a little more experimentation here, including attempts to write longer songs. There are definitely some surprises here, including several longish openings that do one thing before turning to the pummeling qualities of the rest of the track. The two songs that did that best were "Wooden Hands" and "May Love Be With You Always." "Fury" was easily the calmest song on the album-and the most Southern Fried. "A Bow Across a String," a short minimalist piece, may be the most accurate song title of them all. This is a welcome return from a solid band.
