Pátkai, Rozina: Paraíso Na Terra

Rozina Pátkai is an Hungarian born jazz singer with roots tied to Brazilian samba and bossa nova styles. Her secondary education is considerable and she sings in a variety of languages. On her new disc titled Paraíso Na Terra she interprets a series of poems written in Portuguese, Spanish and English. She has a remarkably melodic and smooth voice with perfect pitch and clarity making this album a nice relaxing listen. The acoustic nylon guitars, lush string arrangements and added saxophone (János Ávéd) and trumpet (Balazs Pecze and Wayne Tucker) on a few tracks adds to the smooth jazzy touch.

Gentle acoustic guitar strums and crystal clear vocals sung in Portuguese highlight the first track "Dia Ó Dia". The dreamy vocals, smooth sax solos and tasteful bass and percussion give the song added depth. A deep saxophone begins the title track evolving with light Brazilian style percussion and a wonderfully soaring sax solo. The third track "O Que Será?", another Portuguese poem, has a lighter breezy feel with subtle piano and waves of lushness, likely created by the string quintet. The trumpet solo is another highlight, very smooth and melodic. The silky smooth and soft "Passagem" begins with gentle acoustic guitar, piano, trumpet and strings. Elements of bossa nova are subtlety heard.

Paraíso Na Terra is a gentle and thoughtful jazz album that drifts along languidly, like clouds in a light breeze. For those tranquil moments when you just want to just drift away this may do the trick. Released on TomTom Records.
