Red Lama: Motions

The Norwegian seven-piece rock group Red Lama was formed as long ago as 2011 by a group of friends, but it was only in 2015 that the band's 2016 debut LP Dreams Are Free was released. Released on the All Good Clean Records label who tell us that, "on Motions, the band maintains the same atmospheric, warm and rhythmically-based soundscape, still strongly rooted in classic rock music as heard on their first album…the band has now expanded their musical pallet by embracing influences of kraut rock, British trip hop and Talk Talk-ish art rock of the 80's." Ordinarily any mention of Talk Talk and their ilk would send me running to the music-making device with a very large hammer. That I didn't is testament to the quality of much of the musicianship on offer here. Top most is "Awakening" featuring Danish clarinetist Bjonko who brings a jazzy feel to the rocky meanderings of Red Lama. It's the best and most interesting track by a country mile but other than "Have a Great Today" nothing on here is a real clunker and fans of 60s and 70s psychedelic rock will find much (probably late night) pleasure herein.
