Here's another new live album from the folks over at MoonJune Records, titled Live at Home from talented Serbian guitarist Dusan Jevtovic. Recorded in late December of 2016 at the Decije Pozorište in Dusan's home city of Kragujevac in Serbia, Live at Home features stellar live renditions of songs from his No Answer studio album, and he's joined by keyboard player Vasil Hadzimanov, Pera Krstajic on bass and Pedja Milutonovic on drums.
It's rare that you'll find modern jazz-rock-fusion this emotional & atmospheric, but the passion that these players deliver is evident right from the opening number "No Answer", as gutsy guitar tones, textured keyboard washes, and intricate rhythms fill your senses. Though this is a Dusan Jevtovic album, Hadzimanov plays a pretty big role here as well, and his array of sounds permeate this opening track. The dreamy, melancholy "Angel / Al Aire - Soko Bira" bobs and weaves as if numerous tracks all woven together, soft spoken word vocals and gentle guitar caresses eventually give way to acrobatic electric piano, rumbling rhythms, distorted guitar riffs & venomous lead solos. It's almost like a head on collision between the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Soft Machine, and King Crimson! "Ohrid" is 9+ minutes of cool funk/jazz vamps, again Hadzimanov's electric piano just delightful, as he eventually gives way to Jevtovic's jagged guitar shards before leading the charge to the finale with some wonderful '70s styled tones. "New Pop" is one of the more upbeat tunes on the album, a vibrant fusion piece that probably could have also worked with vocals, but as is contains a wealth of catchy melodies and should appeal to any Brand X or Return to Forever fan. Look for some great guitar & electric piano solos on this one. The short, dark, and menacing "Babe" features some heavy, fuzz toned guitar work from Dusan clearly in the spirit of vintage Robert Fripp, along with some nimble bass grooves courtesy of Krstajic, while the 10-minute "Briga" is a bubbling, simmering stew pot of varying sounds, from Jevtovic's distorted riffs & far reaching soundscapes to Hadzimanov's lush acoustic piano and spacey Rhodes tones, this one cooks and sizzles in menacing fashion as it unfolds.
Live at Home is daring & exciting from start to finish, showing not only a major guitar talent knocking it out of the park in a live setting, but a full fledged 'band' that are a force to be reckoned with. Highly recommended listening for jazz-fusion and prog-rock lovers alike!
