From Denver, Colorado comes doom/stoner/psych act Green Druid and their debut full-length Ashen Blood, out now on Earrache Records. For a fairly young band, they are certainly on a label that will get them exposure, but it ultimately comes down to the music, and Ashen Blood more than packs a wallop with a never ending onslaught of doom laden riffage, beginning right from the opening 9+ minute track "Pale Blood Sky". If your musical tastes dabble in Black Sabbath, The Sword, Sleep, Saint Vitus, and Electric Wizard, then Green Druid will become a welcome addition to your current repertoire. With their heavy psychedelic element, the band expand what would normally be longish songs into potent epics, "Agoraphobia" nearly clocking in at 14-minutes of fuzz laden riffs and haunting vocals...this is some 'heavy' and chilling stuff ladies and gentlemen. The guitars at times are loaded with effects, which only adds to that creepy psych element, with feedback & fuzz providing the perfect marriage on the ponderous dirge that is "Dead Tree". Far way, anguished vocal strains float over massive riffs on the herculean "Cursed Blood", and the wah-wah kicks in for the more uptempo basher "Rebirth" . Perhaps the heaviest & eeriest song here is "Ritual Sacrifice", containing some monster riffs and pulverizing drums, the vocals sounding like Ozzy recorded in a tunnel, but it's all about the mountainous waves of guitar & bass thunder, and make no mistake, this is truly a heavy, heavy track.
Ashen Blood offers up some of the heaviest, doom laden guitar riffs I've heard so far this year. Green Druid are a new name on the doom scene, but they will quickly start turning some heads with this lethal monster of an album.
