Gridfailure: Irritum

Irritum marks the two year anniversary of Gridfailure, the avant-garde/noise project of one David Brenner, and we've seen a host of full length, EP, and split releases from his monstrous alter ego in that time span. 2018 is also expected to welcome another batch of recorded dementia, with Irritum being the first and kicking things off in what we've come to expect now as consistently creepy and unsettling collections of mind altering sounds. Basically speaking, you don't embrace Gridfailure expecting melody, riffs, catchy hooks, vocals, and guitar solos…this is something of a completely different nature, a monstrous beast with 5 heads, each one shrieking something from the bowels of hell but from five alternate areas of that fathomless pit. I've often said in the past that Brenner's Gridfailure is the perfect soundtrack to either your worse nightmare or the backdrop to Hollywood's most disturbing horror/science fiction flick, and that indeed is still the case here. "Exorcised from the Possession of Hope" builds and builds with claustrophobic terror…you feel like your very soul is going to leap from your body due to the mountain tension. Other tracks like "It Feeds on Negative Energy" and "Despondent" utilize all sorts of clever musical and vocal sound effects for the ultimate in harrowing chills, the listener constantly looking over their shoulder for the imminent arrival of some ghastly ghoul or space alien. "Hatecompulse" seeps into your brain and quickly begins to rot your flesh from the inside out, while the near 10-minute "Haze of Traumatic Recurrence" takes the listener into a padded cell, the straightjacket maddeningly tight while giant moths flutter about and the echoes of a war torn village being ravaged by machine guns refuse to fade. This is the stuff of nightmares boys and girls, there's no other way to describe it.

Though Gridfailure won't be for everyone, there's no denying that David Brenner is creating some of the most unique, original, and mind-numbing music in the world today. Don't believe me? Give Irritum a listen and be prepared to have the shit scared out of you.
