In the mood for some Southern Doom? Look no further than this stoner supergroup The Mighty Nimbus, whose new album is chock full of enough meaty sludge and death drones to fill the hull of a large ship. Comprised of current and former members of Alabama Thunderpussy and Sixty Watt Shamen, The Mighty Nimbus offers up a lethal mix of Sabbath/Down styled stoner/doom with a dash of zombified death metal, for a real workhorse of an album.
Like Down, as well as labelmates Crowbar, these guys throw in a little Southern groove into their music to make things interesting, giving a slight blues kick to their heavy slabs of horror riffs. Tunes like "Everything I See" and "I'll Never Weep" feature the neat Southern-fried vocals of Dan Soren, backed up by the thunderous guitar dirges from Pete Campbell. What's not to like about the furious wah-wah drone of the dinosaur stomp of "Broken Hoof", or the two-mile an hour "Drinkin' On a Pile of Skulls", a doomy death metal march into oblivion that moves at a snails pace but is very effective. Fans of faster paced material, sort of like what Black Label Society or High On Fire are doing, will dig "Raising the Mammoth" and the pounding stomp of "Impose My Will", two thunderous pieces that rattle the speakers in a big way.
As good as the majority of this CD is, it's the last three tunes that bring it down a notch. "Sacrament of the Sick", "Eclipse", and the remake of the St. Vitus staple "Born Too Late" feature a little too much of the death metal vocals, which become almost torturous, especially when paired with the slowest and doomiest riffs on the album. Still,, seven out of ten is pretty good, which this CD is. A downtuned special, for all your stoner/doom fans out there-you know who you are.
