Reigning Days: Eclipse

Making a lot of noise and gaining a fair amount of interest along the way, Devonshire newcomers Reigning Days unleash their Eclipse debut through the newly formed Marshall Records. Fusing a decidedly modern framework round some sparky riffs and a more commercial bent, as first impressions go, it has to be said that this lot know how to grab the attention.

Lead single “Empire” fires the album’s opening shots, a dirty, gritty Royal Blood like riff rolling from the speakers as a staccato thrum of intent pulls few punches. Adding a more considered opinion “Gravity” then explains why this lot have been found opening shows for Lower Than Atlantis and Enter Shikari, its melodic but punky attitude something that younger audiences will have no problem getting all agitated about. And yet with “My Sweet Love” adding a surprise slice of Endless Nameless era Wildhearts and presenting it with a joyful Baby Chaos like jostle and joust, these guys are neither one trick ponies or looking to desperately slide into a scene.

However with everything from the Killers coming through in “Boy Who Cried Wolf” to questionable reggae intentions arriving in the shape of “Thrones” and “All I Wanna Do” providing a more straight forward hit of Muse, if there’s one thing that Eclipse is not, it’s stuck in a rut. Cleverly, neither does it leave things feeling as scattergun as the influence list might suggest, the classy, clear vocals from Dan Steer melding the various styles presented into one cohesive core.

With the likes of Kerrang! Team Rock, Radio 1 and even The Guardian newspaper all seemingly keen to get behind this act, where Reigning Days have to be careful is that they don’t believe the early hype and lose sight of the prize. Yes, this is an impressive first offering but it’s just a start - albeit a pretty convincing one that you could imagine easily sliding into mainstream success - but the real work really has to start now by turning a collection of solid songs into something a little more individual. However Eclipse lays solid well constructed foundations from which Reigning Days can hopefully build something long lasting. With a start like this they’ve given themselves a serious chance.
