Shrine of the Serpent: Entropic Disillusion
The latest release by Shrine of the Serpent shows the band in top form. They understand that death /doom is supposed to feel weighed down with musical power and psychological despair. Some of this power comes from the riff but most of it comes from the collective weight of the music itself. At its best, doom conveys feelings of dread and despair"and about helping listeners carry them for a while. With this album, Shrine of the Serpent carry that emotional heft for nearly an hour and we’re better for it.
Shrine of the Serpent has always been heavy, but the music here is heavier and more despairing than before. The guitars are thick, heavy, and slow, but they churn out some stunning riffs and rhythms. The vocals, buried just beneath the instruments, are just as rough and just as menacing as the guitars. The music has a slow tempo, but it is never boring. Listening to Shrine of the Serpent has always been a little bit like sinking into oblivion, anyway. If you know the band, you know what I mean. If you like death / doom, this is an essential new release.
