Apparition: The Ravenous Dusk
It’s hard to predict trends, but there’s definitely an uptick in bands that evoke some kind of nostalgia for 80s horror flicks. I’m not complaining. I love those movies, too, and it’s nice to hear music that tries to do something with all that material. With this album, Apparition are actually creating a soundtrack to original films that only exist in their minds. It’s actually a cool idea. There’s a narrative outline of the basic plot and then the listener can just fall into the world of the vampire Arkhan, his awaking in a new world and his memories of his lost love, Ludmila. I don’t know how things turn out because this album is the first in a planned trilogy, so I guess we’ll see what happens together. In the meantime, the soundtrack for this vampire story is may be enjoyed time and again. The music, not surprisingly, is inspired by bands like Goblin, but there’s also plenty of John Carpenter and other electronic artists here as well. For me, the album was solid but I would have liked a little less ambient sound and a little more overall music. I think I understand why much of the ambient music is there. Without an actual film, something has to create the establishing shots so listeners can know what’s going on. Still, I like the mysterious sound of the synthesized beats and melodies and wanted some more of that. I suggest checking out several tracks on this one. My favorites were “Arkhan Takes Flight” and parts of “The Last Stand.” “Dance of the Phantasms” was pretty cool, too. Overall, this is a terrific idea for an album and I hope Apparition will keep telling us stories. I want to know what happens to Arkan!
