Lesser Glow: Ruined

This is the debut album from Lesser Glow, a band comprised of former members of Black Elm, Irepress, and The Proselyte. They are probably best described as a post metal band but there are elements of everything ranging from doom to hardcore to noise on this album. It makes for an interesting listen, but sometimes it does not come together as effectively as it could have. I suspect the band is still testing the waters to see just what they want to do. The goal for this album, according to the band’s main songwriter, Andrew Nault, was to do something raw and heavy, something that captured the band’s sincerity and drive. Overall, Lesser Glow has definitely made a heavy album that blends multiple musical styles in some interesting ways.

For the most part, the band succeeds, though there are elements here that distract from that overall goal. Some of the album draws on 90s bands, particularly Unsane and Failure. Those elements work nicely but there are also times when the band uses clean vocals in ways that did not quite work. I certainly do not believe all vocals should be growled or screamed, but sometimes clean vocals feel out of place. The harsher vocals suited the music better. For me, the best two tracks were “Fall on Mortal Decay” and “Under the Polar Shade” because they blended together smoothly and made a nice pair.

Track Listing:
1. Ruined
2. Vacant Throne
3. Tel Meggido
4. Empty Eyes
5. Fall on Mortal Decay
6. Under the Polar Shade
