Lee, Lucas: Acceptances Of Gravitational Collapsing Manifestations
Lucas Lee is a Canadian multi-instrumentalist who now resides in California. This is his third release. On his first two albums he worked with drummers Pat Mastelotto and Tobias Ralph. On his new album titled Acceptances Of Gravitational Collapsing Manifestations he has sought the help of drummer extraordinaire Marco Minnemann.
With a title like that you expect the music to be a little unusual and that’s pretty much what you get. This is an album not easy to classify as it has elements of classical, jazz, fusion, metal, progressive rock and even a bit of pop music. Because of the different styles present and the experimental nature of the music one could also put this in the avant-garde category.
The opening track “Intro: Dawn Of The Black Sun” is an experimental offering exploring different ambient sounds with the violin quite prominent. This leads directly into the jazz fusion of “Prelude: The Oregon Trail Crow Invasion Incident” with a great groove laid by Minnemann and excellent guitar from Lee. The mood gets somewhat darker and tense with the interesting “Two Eyes For An Eye: Dr. Kunto’s Demise” featuring angular rhythms and dense guitar and keys. The guitar work is quite innovative here. “Zjeto’s Ascension” is also a bit dark giving rise to more experimental fare. Big bass and moody keys accentuate the ambient/experimental “Above The Law, Pt. 2” followed by the subdued “Coda: Kunto’s QI” and finally “Outro: Sanctuary” where the music moves from a circus-like pop atmosphere to ambient and classical stylings.
This latest offering from Lucas Lee will likely appeal to those progressive music fans who are not averse to listening to more avant and experiment recordings. It is certainly an intriguing and adventurous listen.
