Indie-rock stud Scott McCaughey assembled this 20-minute, seven-song EP of oddball tunes with a motley crew of musical helpers – including R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, the Posies' Ken Stringfellow and the dudes from Wilco. On paper, the idea may not sound very cool, unless you've got a thing for any of the aforementioned artists. But here's the deal: At the Organ is the refreshing sound of talented musicians cutting loose, with regard for neither album sales nor even commercial viability. Nearly all of the songs here, brief as they may be, are sonic adventures that deserve better than EP status and will drive you crazy with their musicality. Opener "Lyrical Stance" is nonsense built around a melody that will implant itself in your psyche, "Hotel Senator" is rife with Brit-rock references, the quirky "Formerly Hail Centurion" boasts what sounds like a crazy-ass calliope riff and closer "One More Bottle To Go" piles up a cacophony of offbeat, out-of-sync drumming before fizzling out. By the time you're really enjoying yourself, the whole thing is over. Which is why you'll be pressing "play" again and again. Take a chance on this one, my friends.
