My Glass World: Prisoners Of Gravity
Jamie Telford has recorded with Paul Weller, and before that The Jam, as well as working with Richard Strange; he is also renowned for his TV music work. My Glass World is where he kicks back and reveals more of himself. Judging by this third outing, Prisoners Of Gravity, from the piano player and singer (and keyboard player and guitarist) he’s a reserved chap who likes to get his point across in an understated manner and with the minimum of fuss. Prisoners Of Gravity is all of those things; reserved, understated and all delivered with fuss at a decided minimum. The ten tracks here swaying and swirling, with piano almost always the lead instrument, although there is a full band in operation.
Often what this all results in is a lack of excitement, “The Workings Of The Heart” reminding of Keane without the grand intentions, while much else lands as though U2 had decided to try and strip everything back to its core. There’s no denying that this is atmospheric stuff and complex in its simplicity and yet with a similar outlook from opening foray to closing lament, there’s not much here to grab the attention and certainly not to hold on to it. Whereas the lyrics can sometimes cloy with their hope to be clever and insightful in their wordplay.
Admittedly, this pop-lite wouldn’t be my usual listening fare and I’d be remarkably churlish if I didn’t stress just how crafted and precise the construction is of the album’s title track and “Trees”. And it’s worth pointing out that Telford is an enigmatic vocal presence of some weight but if it’s any level of excitement you’re looking for, it’s difficult to suggest that you’ll find it here. And as such, My Glass World may well leave you feeling like you are indeed a prisoner of their austere and overbearing gravity.
