Mathias Heise Quadrillion: Decadence
Denmark native Mathias Heise is a jazz/fusion musician who has been around since 2012 when he formed Mathias Heise Quadrillion. They released their debut album Sudden Accent that same year and have now followed it up with their 2017 release Decadence.
Besides a number of guest musicians the main band members include:
Mathias Heise (harmonica, keyboards, vocoder, grand piano, handclaps, synthesizer, string arrangements)
Mads Christiansen (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, handclaps)
David Vang (bass, vocals)
Aksel Stadel Borum (drums, percussion)
This is a really nice jazz/fusion album with great musicianship along with some wonderful melodies. It’s cool to hear the harmonica used in this setting, adding a unique spin to the ensemble’s jazz roots. Heise, at only twenty-three years old is an extremely talented musician with a superb sense of melody. The title track emphasizes how good this band is with nice jazz fusion guitar solos, busy drum work, deliciously floating keyboards ala Steely Dan and tasty harmonica work. The sound becomes more electronic in “Heartbeat/Humanoid”. The enhanced vocals adds to the spaciness but we also get a more traditional laid back feel. It’s a varied track with seamless transitions and fine playing all around. “Cliffhanger” is highlighted with wonderful sax and guitar solos and swirling keyboards. The smooth jazz/fusion sound is both creative and melodic. The spacey/dub electronics in “Electroshock” is perhaps the biggest surprise for me. The eerie synths and deep bass groove in an ultra-cool laidback soundscape is really inventive.
This is a very good fusion project from a group of young musicians who seem to be talented well beyond their years. Definitely worth picking up for fans of jazz and fusion.
