Chrch: Light Will Consume Us All

I recommend Chrch to anyone who will listen. I’ve always been fond of bands that blend the best of doom with an eclectic range of other styles, including drone, ambient sound, and psychedelic rock. Chrch is one of those bands that grabs your attention while also allowing your mind to wander. I like that combination, partly because I like getting lost in music and partly because the warm fuzz of good doom is hard to resist. Chrch is especially good at channeling the power of heavy music into long longs that never sag under their weight. Even better, Eva Rose’s vocals are so ethereal and mysterious that it’s easy to drift away into the power of sound.

I’ve been fond of Chrch since Unanswered Hymns and was happy to get my hands on this, their second release. Light Will Consume Us All follows a similar pattern to Unanswered Prayers in that both albums feature three long songs that show off the way this band can create musical power with only a handful of motifs. Each of them captures Chrch’s range and power beautifully. The first and third track work off of short, melodic, riffs that weave their way into the larger track through one form or another. “Infinite” is my favorite of the two, but “Aether” is no less intense. The second track, “Portals,” starts with screeching feedback only to quickly move into a droning / doom track that is solid from start to finish.

Chrch is an excellent band that will likely gain a bigger following as fans realize just how good their sound and style are. Highly recommended.

Chrch: Light Will Consume Us All

My Score:

Take out the 'u' in 'church' and you have some pretty heavy stuff courtesy of doom act Chrch and their latest release Light Will Consume Us All. This is my first experience with the band, and it certainly won't be the last, their foreboding blend of classic doom & death metal bringing to mind Cathedral's first album with its bruising Black Sabbath inspired riffing, atmosphere, and mix of screaming & growled vocals. Opening cut "Infinite Return" is near 21-minutes of menace, initially starting off as an instrumental cousin to Sabbath's classic "Black Sabbath" before the haunted screeching comes into play and thunderous riffs, eventually giving way to lilting chords and atmosphere before a pounding dirge of a conclusion. Waves of feedback & fuzz permeate the doom trodden "Portals", this time with clean, haunting vocals, but no less potent, before the album concludes with the dreamy "Aether", the gargantuan riffs actually quite melodic and calming, clean vocals battling with harsh, almost black metal styled rasps for an ominous effect.

Good stuff here, three epic length tunes filled with bleak atmosphere and plenty of fuzz laden riffing, making Light Will Consume Us All a total winner for the doom act known as Chrch.
