Horsehedd: No Choice

After repeated spins, the most obvious conclusion that can be drawn about No Choice, the first full-length CD from Seattle's oddly named Horsehedd, is that these four guys are holding back on us, as they probably possess more talent than they actually display here. With two previous EPs to their credit, though, you'd think they would have worked out the kinks already. But there are few memorable melodies (or even memorable songs) among these 10 tracks. "Caught on Tape" comes closest to leaving a lasting impression, but screaming "fuck" and "bitch" during quarter-rests (as singer Druu Rodgers does on "Taken") does not a metal band make. To Rodgers' credit, his sleaze-meets-death-metal throat adds some distinguishing dynamics to this mix of power, thrash, alternative and death metal. But it's not enough. I'm sure these guys have a better album -- and maybe even a better band name -- in them. Somewhere.
