Neronia is a progressive rock band hailing from Germany. They have five albums to their credit with their latest being an all acoustic disc of tracks taken from their previous albums. The album is appropriately titled Pure as these tunes are stripped away reworkings devoid of any electric elements the original versions may have had.
My first thoughts when listening to this disc was how well these tracks stand up to the acoustic treatment. Having never heard the originals I cannot comment on how the acoustic versions compare but I can say this is an excellent batch of tunes.
The first track “Raindrops” has a melodic chiming melody with nice lead and backing vocals and easy going acoustic picking. The lead vocals of Falk Ullmann are excellent throughout the disc. He has a unique tone that immediately had me think of Michael Sadler (Saga) and Oliver Philipps (Everon). A bit of heartfelt sadness can be heard on “Faceless Smile” as well as an excellent acoustic guitar solo. Wistful acoustic arpeggios highlight the slightly melancholic “Frost” while “Blowing Away” includes some darker acoustic guitar tones. More highlights include the wonderful vocal arrangement in “What Else” and the acoustic solo break in the soaring “Cold And Strange”.
After listening to these acoustic tracks I am very curious to hear the band’s previous works. In the meantime Pure is easily recommended.
