Messe Noire: Live Satanist is the brand new live DVD/Blu-ray/CD set from Polish blackened death metal legends Behemoth, and, as I'm sure you've guessed already, this live album contains the band performing their popular 2014 release The Satanist in its entirety. If you happen to pick up the Blu-ray or DVD sets, you get both the Warsaw, Poland and Brutal Assault shows from 2016, and while it's not clear from our audio version here exactly what's on display, the results are damn good. Furious cuts such as "Furor Divinus" and "Messe Noire" bristle with Behemoth's blend of technical black & death metal, the guitars jagged, the blast beats pummeling, and Nergal's vocals raspy & primal. "Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer" contains some great riffs that play off the blast beats quite nicely, while "Amen" is just non-stop pummeling, easily one of the more brutal tracks from the original studio album and even more ferocious here. One of the more intriguing cuts on the album that is performed to perfection in this set is "In the Absence ov Light", a monstrous song that contains plenty of atmosphere and chilling passages, which weave around the brutal elements as Nergal screams his tortured rants. The climax of course is the bombastic "O Father O Satan O Sun!", Behemoth pulverizing the audience with an aural assault that no doubt left everyone in attendance breathless at its conclusion.
Having seen Behemoth live a few times, I can certainly attest to their power in a live context, and though I haven't seen the video portion of Messe Noire: Live Satanist, judging by the audio content, this one will be well worth your hard earned cash.
