Italian bassist/composer Alberto Rigoni has certainly been busy the last decade, with a host of solo albums under his belt as well as work with Vivaldi Metal Prokect, Bassists Alliance Project, and Twinspirits, but he keeps plowing forward with new music, here with an instrumental ambient prog album with master drummer Marco Minnemann titled EvoRevolution. The bulk of this new album by these two virtuosos is taken up by the 33-minute concept title track, which is divided into 6 chapters and provides the meat of this album. If you thought that just bass & drums would have a hard time fleshing out a half hour song, think again. Rigoni manages to create all sorts of melodies and leads with his bass, with Minnemann adding his exemplary flair, colors, and textures. At times heavy, with Rigoni's booming bass riffs, fluid lead lines and harmonic notes packing a punch, and others the arrangements dip into full blown prog, jazz fusion, and ambient soundscapes. Through it all he displays a voice on the bass that is quite engaging and deserved of mention with some of the greats of the instrument. When he and Marco dive into almost frantic free-jazz, things get even more interesting, the drummer flailing away with reckless abandon as he weaves around the bassist's many varied excursions.
At just over 4-minutes, "Back to Life" contains more of a 'song' structure, a playful prog & fusion piece with bubbling bass grooves and velvety lead melody lines, Minnemann's acrobatic drumming the icing on top of this very delicious and tasty cake. Though slightly more than an EP's worth of material, EvoRevolution is a fun instrumental album that sees the meeting of two musical minds who obviously work very well together, and another example of the magic that Alberto Rigoni always seems to find himself in the middle of. Well done gentlemen!
