Oscar Peterson Trio, The + The Singers Unlimited: In Tune
Oscar Peterson was a master of his class, a piano player of the highest caliber and you can hear that on this 1971 release titled In Tune. On the album Peterson and his trio perform with the vocal group The Singers Unlimited.
The disc begins with the infectious “Sesame Street” with its rollicking feel good groove and great piano flourishes. An uplifting song to be sure and the vocal group fits in well with Peterson’s treatment. On the lovely “It Never Entered My Mind” the swirling piano melodies and acapella vocals along with Louis Hayes’ soft touch on the brushes brings back memories of a by gone era. Peterson was a master of contrasts as can be heard in “Childrens Game” where his piano is both subtle and eventful, exploring some unbelievable runs on the keyboard that you just have to admire. The sentimental ballad “The Gentle Rain” features heavenly vocals and piano to match. Peterson’s playful excursions on the pretty ”A Child Is Born” is another highlight as is the wonderful finesse exhibited in the soothing “The Shadow Of Your Smile”.
Sophisticated and masterful are good descriptors of Peterson’s talent. It might seem like an odd pairing on paper but ultimately In Tune was a resounding success.
An MPS release.
