ASG: Survive Sunrise

If Molly Hatchet merged with Anthrax you’d get the sound of ASG. One of the pet peeves I’ve had with Southern Rock over the decades is its more twang than bang like it was desperate to sound Dixie with a heavier drummer. ASG shatters all that crap and thankfully so since these guy blaze hard from the title track “Survive Sunrise.” No yodels, rebel calls or electric fiddles the lead singer belts out the terror screams with the very best of them as evidenced in “Execution Thirst” and “Up From My Dreams.” In fact, once you listen to “Up From My Dreams” you won’t believe this is a southern-fried alt-rock band from North Carolina. More like North Finland.

The fourth track “Lightning Song” is the first song of this album that contains a southern slant to it and it’s a fantastic arrangement melding southern hard rock with thrash elements. The lead guitarist for ASG, a Jonah Citty, is a phenomenal player and I truly hope this release gets the word out of his incredible range and fluidity.

In “Heavy Scars” and “Weekend Money” again the band thrashes forward with another unique blend of southern rock meets Zebra meets Anthrax with a haunting rhythm that demonstrates their musical maturity and ability to experiment without sounding experimental. “Heavy Scars” is my favorite track of this bright and boisterous album. If there anything deeply southern about ASG it’s their knack to sing about deeper topics but not come across depressive.

I really enjoy the last track “Florida Sleeps On” it reminds of me of a heavier Green Day if they had balls and didn’t sell out their punk credentials at the first Visa concert sponsorship. Again, kudos to the lead guitarist who carries this song on this back like he was climbing Mt Everest without breaking a sweat. A perfect performance to end a totally interesting and entertaining album.
