It is rare in today's music market that you get no-prefix-rock-n-roll. Everything is prog-rock, alternate-rock, country-rock, etc. But Antler's debut CD is just good old fashioned rock-n-roll. This Boston based band mixes the riffs of The Smithereens, songwriting of John Hiatt, and the sensibilities of Blue Rodeo to carve out a unique sound.
Opening track "Tombstones and Cigarettes" has a Black Crows tinge. "1975" and "Blood on the Moon" are the kind of Garage Band Rock that Neil and Crazy Horse have been cranking out for years. That's what I like about this release. These guys simply play the rock-n-roll that we all love, but spin it into their own unique signature.
All of the songs on this CD work together with out getting repetitive. The organ playing of Dave Unger reminds me of how Bob Wiseman guided the early Blue Rodeo sound. Never in the forefront, but always present. Craig Riggs has a little gravel in his voice that fits nicely with the darker lyrics of many of the songs.
If you are tired of this-rock and that-rock and simply want to sing along and tap your feet to pure rock-n-roll, then Antler is the CD for you. The talent level within Antler is obvious. Let's hope this is just the beginning to what could be a fun band to follow.
