What happens when you bring together current & former members of acts such as My Dying Bride, Anathema, Solstice, Malediction, and Vellenfyre? Well, probably something like this new UK doom act Godthrymm, who are now delivering their debut EP for Transcending Records, titled A Grand Reclamation. Comprised of lead vocalist/guitarist Hamish Glencross, guitarist Chaz Netherwood, drummer Shaun Taylor Steels, and Rich Mumford on bass, Godthrymm have delivered here four tracks on this debut EP, three of which cross the 7-minute mark, squarely in the Candlemass mold with perhaps a touch of early Savatage epic metal. The title track kicks things off in grand fashion, the riffs looming large and Glencross' vocals powerful but with plenty of snarl, which leads into the complete ass-kicker "Sacred Soil", a potent mid-tempo doom piece with some of the most lethal riffs on the EP, the My Dying Bride influence not hard to miss. Plenty of venom seeping through the mighty "The Pantheon", with Glencross leading the charge with his menacing tones, and the EP closes with the soft instrumental piece "Forever More".
This is quite impressive material from Godthrymm, and we can only hope there is much more to come from this new doom supergroup. Recommended.
