Fates Warning: Live Over Europe

Live Over Europe chronicles Fates Warning's recent headline tour of Europe in support on their excellent late 2016 album Theories of Flight. A double disc set, this live album is packed with not only gems from that recent studio outing, but a host of classics from throughout their career. Mixed by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Kreator, Symphony X) and mastered by Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden, Live Over Europe is available as limited 2CD Mediabook, Gatefold 3LP + Bonus-2CD or as Digital Album.

Kicking off with the excellent "From the Rooftops", the opening cut of Theories of Flight, perfectly sets the stage for what is to come, lead vocalist Ray Alder in fine form, recently walking away from Redemption to concentrate all his efforts once again on Fates Warning. Parallels "Life in Still Water" follows, a tremendous track that still sends chills today, Ray Matheos & Frank Aresti layering riff after riff, Bobby Jarzombek rumbling underneath with some intricate drum fills, and Alder soaring over the top of it all. The raging "One" follows, and there's no let up from there, Fates classics like "Silent Cries", "Pale Fire", "Nothing Left to Say", the fabulous "The Eleventh Hour", "Monument", "Eye to Eye" and even a section of the epic "A Pleasant Shade of Gray" makes an appearance. Tracks from Theories of Flight are nestled in between the older songs, and fit in perfectly, especially the progressive gem "The Light and Shade of Things", one of the standout cuts from that album.

Though some might quibble that not enough from Perfect Symmetry and No Exit are represented in the set list, let alone anything from the John Arch era of the band, this is still a loaded live album with 23 Fates Warning gems, performed brilliantly in front of loving audiences across Europe. It's a mandatory live album for any fan, plain and simple.

Fates Warning: Live Over Europe
Posted by Jon Neudorf, SoT Staff Writer on 2018-08-08 21:28:42
My Score:

Fates Warning is one of the best progressive metal bands on the planet. Their body of work speaks for itself and although the band has reinvented themselves numerous times they have kept their signature sound intact over a career spanning nearly forty years. Really, this band needs no introduction so let’s have a look at this latest platter.

This is the band’s second live disc (on CD) captured during the European leg of their Theories of Flight tour in January of 2018. The twenty-three tracks are taken from eight separate concerts but you would never know that from listening. It really does feel like a cohesive set so kudos to engineer René Ubachs.

The tunes span nine albums so this is a great representation of their career. The first tune “From the Rooftops”, taken from their latest studio album, is quite mellow for the first bit before exploding with rapid fire drum work and progressive metal riffs. The guitar work is exceptional and Alder’s vocals are spot on. Next is “Life in Still Water”, an excellent track from the Parallels album, is a near perfect combination of mood and heavy. The guitar solo, albeit quite short, is as tasteful as it gets. The stop/starts in “One” demonstrates these are tremendously talented seasoned veterans as does the catchy chord progression in “Pale Fire”, taken from the Inside Out album. “Seven Stars” is revved up and heavy right from the start and makes for another cool track. The super tasty guitar groove in “Wish” and the melodic “Another Perfect Day” are more great choices. The first disc ends with the epic “And Yet It Moves” featuring exceptional electric and acoustic guitar.

The second disc is just as noteworthy. The epic “Still Remains” taken from the Disconnected album starts the set in grand fashion. The drum, bass and guitar weaves together to make a true progressive metal classic. The spacey/moody section features superb guitar work that needs to heard. On “Nothing Left To Say” the riffs are heavy and deep and Alder’s lead vocals are awe inspiring. The pummeling riffs on “Acquiescence” and the beautifully moody beginning of “The Eleventh Hour” are more highlights. Alder’s vocals on the latter are incredibly moving.

The album is immaculately mixed and produced as the sound quality is superb. Heck, this sounds better than many studio albums.

I really can’t recommend Live Over Europe enough. This album proves Fates Warning still have a lot to say and what better way than letting your music do the talking. Simply outstanding!

An Inside Out Music release.
