Issa: Run With the Pack

I quite like Issa, I’ve actually even bought some of her earlier releases as well as having had the opportunity to review more than one album as well. If I have ever had an issue with her work it’s that ultimately there’s not enough substance to make me go back and think to myself, ‘I really must listen to Issa again.’ The same problem exists with Run With the Pack. I like it - I don’t love it. I can see the craft which has gone into it, but it doesn’t really grab me and stay with me. I appreciate it but…you get the picture.

Issa herself has a strong if not unique voice and the material suits her well and the album is far from being a duffer. The band on the album is Andrea ToWer Torricini (Vision Divine), Marco Di Salvia (Kee of Hearts) as the rhythm section, Simone Mularoni on guitars and in a move which will surprise absolutely nobody, Alessandro Del Vecchio who plays the keys and occupies a place in the producer’s chair. Given the talent involved it would be a good effort to actually make a bad album but as has often been the way with Issa and other Frontiers’ artists there’s a strong perception that nothing new and vital is being added to the genre. Even Deen Castronovo’s efforts on "Sacrifice Me" don’t raise the bar towards the gold medal level. "Come Back Again" is a song which would sound good on the radio but is thirty years too late to have any chance of doing so. There’s no doubt that if you have Issa’s four previous albums you’ll like this one but chances are that you don’t need this one as adequate as it is.
