US doom veterans Apostle of Solitude return with another collection of massive riffing for Cruz Del Sur, this one titled From Gold to Ash. Always known for their allegiance to the mighty Black Sabbath, From Gold to Ash doesn't stray far from that formula, but damn, these guys consistently come up with some killer songs that never fail to deliver pure headbanging delight time and time again.
Normally, when you see an album start off with an instrumental 'overture' or something similar, in most cases its cause for a 'ho hum', but here, Apostle of Solitude deliver a crushing doom intro in the form of "Overlord", which is followed by the pulverizing "Ruination By Thy Name", an excellent classic styled doom masher with excellent vocals and guitar riffs. "Keeping the Lighthouse" is a slow & groove laden dirge, with riffs to die for, while the near 10-minute "My Heart is Leaving Here" is pure melancholy doom, the riffs blissful, the vocals sublime, and the vibe dark yet majestic, with a scorching lead guitar solo thrown in for good measure. Tons of fuzz and despair permeate the monolithic "Monochrome (discontent)", another lengthy track that leads into grim closer "Grey Farewell", the riffs soaked in fuzz, the drums pounding, and the dual vocal attack perfectly telling the bleak tale, with some delicious wah-wah solos adding the perfect icing on the cake.
While Of Woe and Wounds, the bands previous album, was quite strong, it's pretty open to debate that From Gold to Ash might be as good if not stronger. You be the judge, but no matter how you slice it, this is a very strong doom metal release that deserves your immediate attention.
