it's always a good thing to have a current or former member of King Crimson join your band onstage, and we've seen this a few times over the years and now once again on this new live album from Brazilian jazz-fusion/prog act Dialeto. In this instance, they are joined by ex-Crimson violinist David Cross, who joins the band for half the show, contributing his soaring violin on their adaptations of Bela Bartok compositions, as well as as few King Crimson classics and a Cross original piece.
Dialeto are comprised of Nelson Coelho (guitar, Mellotron guitar), Fred Barley (drums, vocals), and Gabriel Costa (bass, vocals), with Cross joining them onstage starting with track number five. Their blistering display of progressive fusion can be heard on rampaging versions of the multi-part "Roumanian Folk Dances" as well as "Mikrokosmos", the latter another three part suite chock full of atmospheric passages, thunderous rhythms, and Coelho's savage guitar lines. Cross adds his wispy violin to this powerful mix, and by then it's delicious ear candy for the listener. "The Young Bride: For Children Vol 1 No. 17" is just ominous, fiery instrumental rock, complete with jagged, weaving guitar & violin lines, Costa's bass booming and Barley's drums pounding. If you didn't know this was a Bartok piece, you'd swear it was a long lost King Crimson classic.
Cross and his majestic violin lead into the classic "Exiles", and for the rest of the set the listener is treated to a few gems from the Crimson catalog, as well as a Cross original. Gorgeous violin & sumptuous, distorted guitar lines make up "Exiles", Barley covering John Wetton's vocal lines quite nicely, while the Cross original piece "Tonk" rocks hard in classic Red era fashion. The slow build to "The Talking Drum" will send chills up and down your spine, and the band then launches into the frantic "Larks Tongues in Aspic Part II", complete with heavy guitar riffs, searing violin, and tricky rhythms. Majestic & savage all at the same time. It's fitting to end this set with the emotional "Starless" one of my personal all-time favorite King Crimson songs, Barley once again nailing that poignant Wetton vocal, Coelho drawing every bit of his soul out of his guitar (Robert Fripp would be proud) as well as using his Mellotron effect to add that extra wave of atmosphere, with Cross' violin floating alongside. Wonderful stuff.
